Vicksburg Shopping List

I found this scrap of paper the other day and it made me laugh like a schoolgirl. A 6′2″, two-hundred and twenty pound bearded schoolgirl that is.Vicksburg Shopping ListWe’d been on the Mississippi River for about two months by the time we arrived in Vicksburg. The week spent paddling down from Memphis was probably the lowest point in the trip. It was the middle of July, the heat was scorching, we were running low on both time and money, and had lost a few days waiting for Hurricane Dennis to blow through. All in all, not good times.

Anyway, we slide into Vicksburg, hide the canoe behind an abandoned barge, and hoof it into town with nothing but a couple of drybags of personal stuff and the stinky clothes on our backs. It’d been a week since our last shower, so we smelled like something a dog rolls in. Nasty, nasty, nasty!

We hoof it into Vicksburg and end up checking into the Horizon Casino Hotel. First we went to the room to make a couple of phone calls, then headed down to the buffet for dinner. After gorging ourselves, we headed back up and soaked our clothes in the tub, leaving a 4″ ring of sludge.

This was a typical shopping list for us. The “Tango” on the list is for some generic, cheap Tang-like substitute. Sandwich stuff, because it was too hot to cook anything, Squeeze Cheese (because cheese squirting from a can is both entertaining and tasty), and Superglue for my cell phone. By this time, my phone was held together but duct tape, wire, and glue, but still sort of functioned if you held it just right. I’ve still got that mangled phone somewhere as a reminder of the trip.
