Staying out of towns is the #1 key to pulling off a cheap trip. Congrats on doing it on $800! That's incredible! I wouldn't change my trip for anything, but I could probably do it for less than half of what I spent the first time. Can't emphasize enough how important it is to carry less gear and stay out of town. Do those two things, and you'll be thru-hiking on the cheap. I thru'd the AT in 2005 on 800 dollars, including gear. That's pretty dang cheap for the best few months of your life. Really great post.
