Neuse River Google Map

Here’s the Google Map that I’ve been using as a planning device for the upcoming Neuse River Expedition. Right now, it’s got all the access points mapped out, cumulative and total mileages, and a few other features (campsites, grocery store, etc). I’ll be adding to this as I firm up plans, and will be using it daily as I paddle down the river. I’ll also be able to upload geo-tagged photos so you’ll see exactly where a picture was taken. Pretty cool stuff.

Here’s the direct link to the map in case things look goofy. You should be able to see multiple pins with info as you hover over them. You can also zoom in and out as you like. Play with it and let me know what you think!

This is really cool, I cant wait to see some pictures on it.

One question, do you have some method of gauging about how far you can paddle in a day? I have seen values of about 3mph online as an average paddle speed but have no idea how accurate that would be (obviously you would crank that up a few mph for faster rivers)

    thanks

  • Jacob,

Great question. 3 mph is a good guesstimate to work around. I’ve paddled the first 40 miles of so to get a feel for the river, and that’s about how fast I plan to go. I’ll likely paddle somewhere around 20-25 miles a day when it’s all said and done, depending on weather, motivation, and proximity to a decent BBQ stand. Itineraries tend to go out the window when there’s good food around :)

    Thanks!

a friend of mine and myself are trying to plan some two-three day paddle trips this fall somewhere in NC or VA. Im actually at NCSU in grad school studying water quality in the Tar-Pamlico river (riparian buffers specifically) so I really appreciate what you’re trying to do. Best of Luck

  • Looks pretty cool. I love using google maps to plan routes. I wish it had decent topo maps and more detail on the rivers.

  • [...] Check out the list of the kayaking gear he’ll be taking on the Expedition. He’ll be doing video gear reviews while out on the river! Check out a planning map HERE. [...]

I mapped a distance from road to road down the Neuse, but I can’t figure out how to get people to see it. I did it on google maps. Help
