It’s two in the morning and I’m wide awake. Just went for a walk on the sandbar and sat by the river for awhile to relax. It’s so quiet out here right now – nothing but a few critters scratching around in the woods behind us and waves lapping the shoreline. I’d like to bottle this moment for later.
A barge went by a little while ago, scanning the river with its incredibly bright spotlight. They’re looking for their routes between the buoys for safe passage up the river. It’s amazing how bright those spotlights are when you see them from the side. Sometimes they’ll scan the river and pause for a few moments on our campsite. I’m not sure if they’re confused by the reflective tape on the canoe or if they’re just bored and want to wake us up. No matter–it’s reassuring to know that we’re not the only folks out here. The desolation the last week has been more intense. We’ve seen almost no other folks out on the water save the barges since St. Louis.
I’ve got to try and sleep now or at least try and get some rest. Paddling all day on just a couple of hours of sleep is pure misery.
