This is one of my favorite photos of our trip down the Mississippi River. We’d just finished packing the canoe and were getting ready to put in. I was thinking “what in the hell have I gotten myself into?” It took us 73 days to paddle the 2,200 miles down to the Gulf of Mexico.
The Mississippi River begins just behind that little bridge behind me. It’s about 15′ across and a couple feet deep here.

That’s just awesome, John.
Exactly where is Lake Itasca? When you first started paddling, were you certain that you would finish the trip? Sounds like a great adventure.
Scott – glad you liked it. We gotta get the boats in the water soon.
Richard – Lake Itasca State Park is in North Central Minnesota. ( http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/itasca/index.html)
When we first started paddling, I think we’d already decided that we were going to finish the trip one way or another. You’ve got to take everything day-by-day, but that larger goal has got to be floating around back in your head too.
