Krispy Kreme Challenge 2009

There’s a time to run, a time to eat donuts, and a time to do both at the same time. Yes, it’s Krispy Kreme Challenge time again!

Here’s the deal. Runners start at the NC State University Belltower, run 2 miles to the Krispy Kreme, eat a dozen donuts, then run back. In under an hour.  Last year they had around 3,400 runners, and raised over $20,000 for the NC Children’s Hospital. This year they expect around 5,000 runners. It’s a great time, for a great cause.

Krispy Kreme Challenge 2007 Here’s the recap of my first Krispy Kreme Challenge in 2007. This will be my third consecutive year, but I’m doing things little different this time: I’m Training. See, I usually just show up, run to Krispy Kreme, eat the dozen donuts, the drag myself back to the NCSU Belltower with no training whatsoever. I then feel like death for a few days while basking in the afterglow of this athletic endeavor. I’ve been running semi-regularly for the past month, and hope to not feel like I’m having an aneurysm around mile three like usual.

Here’s this year’s official route, and here it is plotted out for distance and elevation.

Krispy Kreme Challenge 2009

This is a 4-mile, out and back course (2 miles each way). The rough splits are as follows:

.25 mile -  corner of Oberlin Rd and Park Drive

.5 mile – Ambleside Drive

.75 mile – Park Dr & E. Forest

1 mile – corner of W. Johnson and St. Mary’s

1.25 miles – W. Johnson and Glenwood Ave

1.5 miles – Sudz Car Wash (413 W. Peace Street)

1.75 miles – Shell gas station (112 W. Peace Street)

2.0 miles -Krispy Creme (corner of W. Peach and Person St)

Just reverse everything for the run back.

A couple of notes:

  • This is similar to the 2007 course, with first 1.5 miles or so being downhill through some cool neighborhoods. I prefer this to last year’s route that ran straight up Hillsborough and St. Mary’s. Seeing those long uphills were a killer for me.
  • Once you reach Peace Street, you’ve got just over 1/2 mile uphill to the Krispy Kreme.
  • Conversely, it’s about 1 1/2 miles uphill from Peace Street to the Belltower.
  • Once you reach Oberlin, you’re less than .25 mile to the Belltower. Pour it on!
