Updating and adding content to the Source to Sea site has always been a hit-or-miss proposition with me. When we’re out on a trip, words flow out pretty easily, and now that I’ve gotten more into video and podcasting, there’s that much more stuff to play with. If I don’t get outside every once in awhile, the site tends to get stagnant. Overall, I’ve probably averaged 2-3 updates a month over the five years Source to Sea has been around. Till now…

I leave it to you, dear reader, to let me know how much you’d like to see out of this site. Are we posting enough? Too much? Vote here and let me know!

Last Day to Vote for the Neuse River Book Cover

It’s come down to the last day, and with 247 votes there still isn’t a clear-cut leader in the Neuse River Book Cover Contest. Three covers are nearly tied, with one bringing up the rear. Vote Now

I’m randomly selecting one name for every 50 entries, and the winners for the free books will be announced on Wednesday. Pre-orders for both the paper version and ebook versions will be start later this week. Pre-order prices will be $9.95 for the paper version, and $6.95 for the ebook. The book will retail for $12.95 (full-color paper version) and $8.95 (ebook).

The book should be in area stores and on Amazon.com in mid-June. I’ll also be releasing a DVD on the trip later this summer. Vote Now and with your Facebook friends!

Neuse River Book Cover Contest

I’m releasing a photobook about last year’s expedition down the Neuse River and I’m letting Source to Sea readers pick the cover! I’ll be drawing names for a free copies of the book, and pre-orders for both the paper version and

Ebook will be start next week. Winners will be announced on May 10.

Neuse River Day 5 Update

Short day today. Been running errands in Goldsboro today, but had a huge day yesterday. Lots of rain so far, but cooler temps too.

Doing an interview later with the Goldsboro Times-Argus, and will post that link when I get it. Great name for a newspaper.

Paddling to Seven Springs tomorrow with members of the Twin Rivers Paddling Club. Should be a great day on the river.

Neuse River Day 4 Podcast

This one’s short and sweet till I get to Goldsboro with a real cell signal. I hope you can hear that animal screaching in the background. Right now I’m in the middle of The Wild Kingdom, with beavers slapping the water, mosquitoes swarming my hammock, and random other critters running around.

31 miles paddled today, so I’m sleeping like a baby tonight.

Great day on the Neuse River. Paddled about 23 miles, and I’m smoked. Not much of a cell signal here, so I hope this makes it out.

New Source to Sea website layout

I’ve been playing with making the change to a new look for a few months now, and here is it. The main reason for changing was to allow for larger images and more social media tools to be on the main page. The Neuse River Expedition is scheduled to take off on August 26, and I wanted to have some time to play with things, try out new tools, and get everything ironed out.

Anything missing? Anything confusing? I want to know. Take a poke around the site and tell me what you think.

Neuse River Google Map

Here’s the Google Map that I’ve been using as a planning device for the upcoming Neuse River Expedition. Right now, it’s got all the access points mapped out, cumulative and total mileages, and a few other features (campsites, grocery store, etc). I’ll be adding to this as I firm up plans, and will be using it daily as I paddle down the river. I’ll also be able to upload geo-tagged photos so you’ll see exactly where a picture was taken. Pretty cool stuff.

Posting Photo Albums to your Website with Posterous

I’m testing out the method I plan to use later this month when I paddle te Neuse River. These photos were taken with my iPhone after work today. I then emailed them directly from the phone to my Posterous.com account. From there, it was sent to our website (http://www.sourcetosea.net ), flickr, facebook, and Twitter accounts. I would have loved to have had this capabity when we paddled the Mississippi River in 2005.

Make sure to subscribe to our website for updates on the Neuse River Expedition. The subscription box is in the top right corner of the site.

Mobile Blogging with Posterous

Just trying out a new tool I stumbled onto today. One thing that has always been thorn in my side on long trips is sending photos and updates from the trail or river. In the past, I was wholly dependent on public libraries and other access points to get on the Internet. This often put me behind the eight ball if I had to get an article out. It also was a general pain if I just wanted to send a couple of emails. No more of that for me!

I’ve gotten much heavier into using social media tools in the last few months, especially since purchasing an iPhone. I’m still a neophyte, but it’s remarkable how far things come in just a few years. I’m now able to update anywhere I can get the smallest signal to send an email or SMS message.

Think it doesn’t work?

This photo was taken with my iPhone, emailed to the Posterous.com blogging service, which then automatically routed it to our Sourcetosea.net website. I also sent it to our account at flickr.com, who then automatically created a twit on my Twitter feed. I still can’t believe I wrote and posted this from the middle of a lake!
