Man, you never know what you’ll find when cleaning out old files. I ran across these photos and scanned them yesterday. Took them on a disposable camera in the first few days. Man, we had NO idea what we were getting into!

Neuse River Expedition Photos

Here’s a sample of some of the 700 photos I took while paddling down the Neuse River. With everything being digital these days, it’s waaaaaaaay too easy to get photo-happy, but it beats running out of film. I remember allocating myself one roll a week when I thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2000.

Made it to Kinston about 1pm today (Wednesday, Sept 2.) My 7:1 days to shower ratio was getting the best of me, but I'm squeaky-clean now that I've had a shower at the Neuseway Campground right on the river. Staying there tonight, then pushing off first thing in the morning for the final 50 miles of the trip. I should be in New Bern in two days, with Cal Hansen from the Twin Rivers Paddling Club showing me the way. Can't wait. We'll be finishing up at Union Point Park (New Bern) on Friday afternoon, so come on out in you're in the area. I

Here's a few pictures to tide things over. There's a ton of these things to sort though, but I'll organize them into a proper gallery when I get back. If you group is interested in a Slideshow talk, just use the Contact Page at http://www.sourcetosea.net. I'll be ready to roll by Oct 1 or so.

Intermittent Updates until Goldsboro

I hope everyone is doing well. The Neuse had been great so far and I’m finally getting into the groove of the trip. Had a big ole’ thunderstorm yesterday, so things are pretty juicy for now.

I’m currently playing this silly game called “Trying to Dry Stuff on the Deck of the Kayak while Paddling.” Yeah, it’s a totally futile endeavor with all the splashing, showers, and 90% humidity, but what the heck, I’m an optimist.

I’m guessing that cell coverage is going to be spotty at best for the next 2 days. It may be Monday before I can get a signal, but itll be fine. I’m in Smithfield now and getting ready to head into the “Let’Lones”. No toad crossings for about 23 miles. Sounds good to me.

Appalachian Trail Photo of the Month Great Smoky Mountains

This was taken about halfway into the Great Smoky Mountains, around December 15, 2005. From reading my journal, I was at least a month behind schedule at this point, and was just looking forward to finishing up at Springer Mountain in Georgia. The weather had other ideas. It had been cold and rainy for the previous month with scattered snowstorms, but nothing too serious.

Things changed once I hit the Smokies. Rain turned to snow, and temperatures dropped to around zero at night. We were breaking trail the last forty miles through snow drifts and ice. Can’t say it was alot of fun at some points, but I’ve still got all my fingers and toes and all’s well in the end.

Mississippi River Photo of the Month

This is one of my favorite photos of the trip. It was taken 60 days into the journey, somewhere in between Memphis and Vicksburg, on July 14, 2005. The weather was scorching, we were getting worn down, and we’d just taken a few days off to dodge Hurricane Dennis. By this point, we still had 13 days left before we’d get to the Gulf of Mexico.

We were taking a break and I was just messing around taking some sand and mud photos. Turned around, and got a shot of Jess stretching out on the gunnels of the canoe. I love the waterline on the boat, and the haze in the air. It had to have been around 100 degrees or so.

Picasa vs. Flickr for Adventure Travel

I’m in a quandry, and I’d love some advice concerning photo hosting. Right now I’m using a Flickr Pro account ($25/yr) to host our photos, but I’m not crazy about it to be honest. It plays OK with Wordpress, but I hate the album plugin I’m using and have no time to sett up another plugin. Their web interface is a little slow when editing, uploads from a Mac are a pain, but overall nothing is a complete dealbreaker.

Things I need from a photo-hosting site:

EASY to upload from anywhere. We’ll be doing more long-term traveling sometime in the next few years, and I need to be able to easily upload photos to the blog, as well as any newspapers or magazines I’m writing for at the time.
Simple interface, preferably Mac-native
Ability to blog directly from the application
Social-media friendly
Plays well with Wordpress sites
Cheap is always good

Now for the quandry part.

I use Google applications for 95% of everything I do. All my email, writing, calendar, analytics, and whatnot are Google-powered, and I’d like to go ahead and use their Picasa Photo service to integrate everything. I have one of their free accounts and love their PC desktop interface and uploading features. If they had a native Mac application, I’d ditch IPhoto in a heartbeat and switch to Picasa.

Any words of wisdom? I’d love to hear any real-world experiences.

Biking from Greensboro to Raleigh with an Amtrak Twist

Just wanted to post a couple of quick pictures from last weekend. Jess and I rode our bikes down to the train station, took the Amtrak from Raleigh, then meandered about 100 miles back to our front door. Got to visit with family and friends, saw a great little parade in Millsboro, took in a festival in Liberty, and ate plenty of ice cream and snacks over three days.

Jess rode her mountain bike with hybrid tires, and I rode a three-speed Raleigh with a rear hub built in 1952. I’m writing an article on the trip for the Greensboro News and Record that should be out sometime in the next couple of weeks.

I’m sold on using the train for bike touring, and will do a how-to article on that soon. I’ll also post the full photo album once it’s cleaned up. Great fun!

Appalachain Trail Thru-hike Photos

Here’s a set of photo’s from my southbound thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail (AT) in 2000. This hike totalled about 2,165 miles from July 1, 2000 through January 11, 2001.

I was quite glad to drag myself off Springer Mountain, Georgia, but it was a true life-changing experience. There’s no way I would have gone back to grad school, paddled the Mississippi River, or started a PhD program if I hadn’t spent those six months on the AT.

I still think about this trip almost every day, and am currently analyzing the data from a thru-hiker study I began last year. This has turned out to be the largest dataset of thru-hikers ever conducted, representing over one million miles of thru-hiking on the AT.
