See and download the full gallery on posterous Sent from my iPhone Just wanted to put up a quick post. Things have been absolutely nuts since I got off the Neuse River some month and a half ago. My job has been absolutely insane, and Jess had a cataract taken out, which lead to a detached retina. (Pro-Tip: never, ever get a detached retina if you can [...] I’ve been getting much more active on Twitter and Facebook lately. It’s amazing how quick information can get out in the world these days. I’m definitely going to be using more tools like Twitter, Iphone apps, Google Maps, YouTube, Facebook, and Flickr on our next trip. Feel free to join up and check us out [...] There’s a time to run, a time to eat donuts, and a time to do both at the same time. Yes, it’s Krispy Kreme Challenge time again! Here’s the deal. Runners start at the NC State University Belltower, run 2 miles to the Krispy [...] Just in case you hadn’t noticed, there’s a mighty big election coming up tomorrow. Vote your conscious, but please go vote. For more information about polling places, confirming your voter status, or registration questions, go visit the non-partisian folks at www.justvote.org. North Carolina had an incredible early-vote turnout with this year, with more than 2.5 million [...] As I write this, Hurricane Gustaz is hammering New Orleans and Morgan City, LA. Jess and I just want to extend our thoughts and prayers to folks in that area, and hoping for the best. Feeling helpless from 1,000 miles away, -John Ran across some old photos and began to reminisce about the two years we spent living in a straw bale yurt. I designed the yurt while thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail (AT), and built it during my first quarter of grad school at Ohio University. My AT journal is littered with numbers divided or multiplied by [...] Moleskine notebooks have become all the rage for the hipster crowd, but I’ve got to admit that my little black book is pretty handy. It’s used as my mini-journal, a place to jot down random ideas, store receipts, and doodle. I also use it as my wallet after getting rid of most of the crap [...] I commute by bike lately, riding on a greenway parallel to the main road. I would have never seen this patch of blackberries if I was sitting in the truck, that’s for sure. One more benefit to riding to work! I finally got around to getting some work done on the book about our canoe trip down the Mississippi last week. It’s far too easy for me to let things slide for first a day, then a week, then a month… After procrastinating for so long, any progress is good progress, but I’m still [...] I’m taking a day off and sneaking out of town for a long weekend in the Grayson Highlands / Mount Rogers area. I’ve probably been there 15 times, so planning was a piece of cake. The weather looks crappy, but I’d rather spend a few days in sideways rain and wind then in the office [...] “A butt at rest will stay at rest unless acted upon by an outside force. A butt in motion will stay in motion if it just gets off the couch.” ~John Pugh I’m a slothful individual. I can heat a house with burnt time. I slid just under the tax deduction wire by being born on [...] Writing a book is an adventure. To begin with, it is a toy and an amusement; then it becomes a mistress, and then it becomes a master, and then a tyrant. The last phase is that just as you are about to be reconciled to your servitude, you kill the monster, and fling him out [...] Rituals are important for Jess and I. Little things make a world of difference when you’re putting you head down in a different place every night. We take an inflatable pink [...] I’m recovering today from running the 3rd annual Krispy Kreme Challenge. A couple of NC State undergrads cooked up this event a few [...] |
