Here’s a few of the bridges we paddled under while on the Mississippi and Atchafalaya rivers. I always looked forward to getting to a bridge. You could see many of them from miles away, but paddling close to them gave me a better perspective of the size of those things.
It was always cool to [...]
OK, I like to paddle and all, but this is a bit brisk for me! A few folks around Minneapolis start off the New Year by sliding their kayaks off the ice and into the Mississippi River. Check out the dude practicing his roll at 1:12. Brrrr!
OK, so I’m kind of a slacker when it comes to getting disposable cameras back to the photo lab. Finally took a handful of these things in and man, there were some cool photos on them!

The “Dead Zone” in the Gulf of Mexico continues to grow each year and excessive nutrients are sent downstream. It’s been estimated to cover over 8,500 square miles, or roughly the size of New Jersey. Here are some links with more info about the cause and effects of eutrophication in the Gulf.

Here are a few links from other folks that have paddled the Mississippi River. I’ve also included a towboat captian, and Martin Strel, who SWAM the Mississippi River!

I put this together on Imovie a few days ago and loaded it to YouTube. Let Ike and Tina Turner take you on a trip down the Mississippi!
What do you think?
I found this scrap of paper the other day and it made me laugh like a schoolgirl. A 6′2″, two-hundred and twenty pound bearded schoolgirl that is.We’d been on the Mississippi River for about two months by the time we arrived in Vicksburg. The week spent paddling down from Memphis was probably the lowest point [...]
I ran into the coolest podcast last week. This is a series of stories about Mississippi river rats who lived on the shores of the river way back when. Good stuff put out by Atlantic Public Media, and sponsored by The Nature Conservancy and the Public Radio Exchange.

“You are listening to National Weather Service radio station WXM 99…. Here’s the weather summary…Cold conditions will continue…snow showers and light rain…low’s 30-35, high in the mid 40’s, winds 15-20 mph..”
The cracking, digitized voice from the weather radio was bringing us little good news but is was time to get moving. [...]
Resupplying by mail is a fairly simple process. The package is sent to the desired post office via general delivery. You show your ID to the postmaster and they give you your mail. You’ll want to allow several days for your package to arrive at the Post Office, but be aware that some locations will [...]
Ran across this picture today while playing with our Flickr account. Paddling the Mississippi was the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but I’d jump on the river again in a heartbeat.
This was a couple of days before we hit Memphis, and I was looking through my binoculars to try and see that mile marker on [...]

We’d been on the Mississippi River for about 40 days, and had made it to Hannibal, Missouri. This was an interview we did with one of the TV local stations (KHQA). The reporter, Sara Anderson, was the hardest working lady in Hannibal. She was also our waitress that night!
(Jess and I were getting absolutely eaten up in Minnesota! -John)
Mosquito. Oh you @!*^%*# mosquito!
My loathing toward you has no bounds.
None.
You are my nemesis.
No friend would torment me so.
Painful proboscis poking.
Suck, suck, sucking away at me.
There’ll be no quarter for you.
Why must you torment me?
I’ve done you no harm, yet.
Come hither my pretty. [...]
