Southbound on the Appalachian Trail
Come on out to one of the following Great Outdoor Provision Company locations and catch my slideshow and prep talk on Thru-Hiking the Appalachian Trail. I spent 6 1/2 months hiking the Appalachian Trail in 2000 and it was a life-changing experience to be sure (My journals are here.) I’ll [...]
Here’s a rough cut of the Down the Neuse River short film. I shot all footage while paddling 200 miles down the Neuse River in 2009. This film will be screened at a Kinston and Oriental locations of the upcoming Neuse Riverkeeper Film Festival. We’ll be having a full screening at the Sweetwater Brewing Company [...]
This one’s short and sweet till I get to Goldsboro with a real cell signal. I hope you can hear that animal screaching in the background. Right now I’m in the middle of The Wild Kingdom, with beavers slapping the water, mosquitoes swarming my hammock, and random other critters running around.
31 miles paddled today, so [...]
Just a few real quick photos while I have a little cell phone signal. I’ll be doing the real updates on Monday from Goldsboro. This river is incredible!

2003 Neuse River Fish Kill
Some bad news coming in from the Neuse River over the last few days. Larry Baldwin, the Riverkeeper for the lower Neuse River, and the NC Division of Water Quality are reporting at least 3.5 million fish have died in the Neuse since last Thursday due low oxygen [...]
I’ve been getting much more active on Twitter and Facebook lately. It’s amazing how quick information can get out in the world these days. A friend of mine sent me this link to the Down the Mississippi article series from the Telegraph (UK.) Great stuff in this series, and plenty of stuff to chew on. The photos and videos brought back alot of memories of our trip down the river in 2005.
The writer, Toby Harnden, is on Twitter as [...]
Here’s a small list of Mississippi River Conservation and Recreation groups you might want to check out. There’s plenty more out there, and feel free to contact me with their info so I can add them as well.
I’m not going to touch the politics of this, but the Appalachian Trail Conservancy should probably give Mark Sanford an honorary membership based on the publicity of the last couple of weeks. Here’s the Google Trend report on “appalachian trail” for the last 12 months. Notice anything interesting in 2009?
Here are a list of webcams for the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. Everyone need a little river fix once in awhile!

I’m being especially nostalgic for the Mississippi River today. Four years ago we paddled our canoe into Red Wing, Minnesota. Red Wing was a planned stop for us, and we took a day off to hang out with one of Jessica’s friends from Americorp. It also gave us a chance to dry out our gear, [...]
