Our facebook buddy Charles Vaught is starting his paddle the Missouri River then down to New Orleans next week. He’s doing this to raise awareness for SAFE, a human trafficking shelter in Lee County, Florida. Last year he and other friend (Tommy Owen) paddled their tandem kayak over 1,600 miles down the Mississippi River [...]
First strokes on the Mississippi River
I can’t believe five years have already passed since we first dipped our paddles into the Mississippi River on May 15, 2005. 73 days and 2,200 miles later, we finally reached the Gulf. Even after a year of planning, we really had no idea what exactly we were getting [...]
It’s come down to the last day, and with 247 votes there still isn’t a clear-cut leader in the Neuse River Book Cover Contest. Three covers are nearly tied, with one bringing up the rear. Vote Now
I’m randomly selecting one name for every 50 entries, and the winners for the free books will be announced [...]
Picking up a Maildrop on the Appalachian Trail
I wrote earlier on how to send a maildrop on the Appalachian Trail to any post office via General Delivery. Now that there are enough stores near the Appalachian Trail (and Pacific Crest Trail for that matter) to get buy food along the way, I typically just [...]
Man, you never know what you’ll find when cleaning out old files. I ran across these photos and scanned them yesterday. Took them on a disposable camera in the first few days. Man, we had NO idea what we were getting into!
I can not wait till this DVD comes out in a couple of weeks. The folks at CackleTV have put together what looks to be an absolutely fantastic video of white water and flatwater canoeing, trekking, all manner of other cool stuff. Really, do yourself a favor and check out the video clip below.
Enjoy this [...]
Here’s a sample of some of the 700 photos I took while paddling down the Neuse River. With everything being digital these days, it’s waaaaaaaay too easy to get photo-happy, but it beats running out of film. I remember allocating myself one roll a week when I thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2000.
Here’s a quick video I took after spending 10 days on the Neuse River. Be on the lookout for full video gear reviews for the Hurricane Kayaks Santee Expedition, Astral Buoyancy V8 PFD, Playtus Clean Stream water filtration system, Sea to Summit drybags and Kitchen Sink, and a few other pieces of my favorite gear. [...]
This one’s short and sweet till I get to Goldsboro with a real cell signal. I hope you can hear that animal screaching in the background. Right now I’m in the middle of The Wild Kingdom, with beavers slapping the water, mosquitoes swarming my hammock, and random other critters running around.
31 miles paddled today, so [...]
Just a few real quick photos while I have a little cell phone signal. I’ll be doing the real updates on Monday from Goldsboro. This river is incredible!

I hope everyone is doing well. The Neuse had been great so far and I’m finally getting into the groove of the trip. Had a big ole’ thunderstorm yesterday, so things are pretty juicy for now.
I’m currently playing this silly game called “Trying to Dry Stuff on the Deck of the Kayak while Paddling.” Yeah, [...]
Great day on the Neuse River. Paddled about 23 miles, and I’m smoked. Not much of a cell signal here, so I hope this makes it out.
Thanks again for the well-wishes. It keeps my mojo up!
Take care, -John

Just a quick note from the river. I’m finally underway and ready to get to paddlin’ onthe Neuse! www.SourcetoSea.net Thanks for all the support and emails. I really do appreciate it. Here’s hoping that Hurricane Danny stays out to sea for a bit. I like to apologize to the entire eastern seaboard ahead of time, because [...]
Just a quick update on where things stand with one week to go. Be on the lookout for the Source to Sea Project Facebook page on the next day or so.
